President Bola Tinubu has ended decades of dangerous river crossings and expensive air travel to Bonny Island in Rivers State with the completion of the Bodo–Bonny Road. The development was praised by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, during his visit to Bonny Local Government Area on Thursday.
Wike said the road, now open to vehicles, provides the first land connection to Bonny Island, which is known as a major oil and gas centre in the state. He explained that the project had been discussed by past governments for many years without success until the Tinubu administration ensured its completion. He also credited the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, for supporting the project and seeing it through.
According to Wike, travelling to Bonny in the past was always stressful due to sea tides and fears linked to air travel over the ocean. He noted that the new road has changed that experience and brought relief to residents and visitors. He urged the people of Bonny to remain united and not allow political disagreements in the state to distract them from development, adding that unity among leaders brings progress to communities.
The lawmaker representing Degema–Bonny Federal Constituency, Cyril Hart, praised Wike for promoting women participation in governance during his time as Rivers State governor. He said efforts were ongoing at the National Assembly to support similar inclusion nationwide through proposed legislation.
The Chairman of Bonny Local Government Council, Abinye Pepple, also commended Wike for projects carried out in the area and for supporting inclusive leadership in the state. He described the completion of the road as a historic moment, noting that it is the first time residents can travel by land from Bonny to Port Harcourt. He added that the project has brought a new experience to the people and strengthened their support for the current administration.
