Datti Baba-Ahmed said Peter Obi would be received back into the Labour Party if he fails to secure the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 general election. He made this known during an interview on a live television programme aired by Channels Television and monitored in Abuja.
He explained that Obi’s return to the Labour Party would be a better option, considering that both of them contested the 2023 presidential election on the party’s platform. According to him, the Labour Party remains open and safe for Obi, and there would be no resistance or hostility against him if he decides to come back.
Baba-Ahmed noted that moving from one political agenda to another may not serve Obi’s long-term political interest, adding that staying with a familiar platform would offer more stability. He said he personally would stand by Obi and ensure his return is smooth if the ADC ticket does not work out.
The statement followed reports of Obi aligning with a coalition linked to the ADC, nearly three years after he and Baba-Ahmed ran together for president and vice president under the Labour Party. Despite the political shift, Baba-Ahmed said he remains satisfied with what they both achieved during the 2023 election and described their joint effort as something to be proud of.
He concluded by reaffirming that the Labour Party still considers Obi a major figure in its political future as discussions and alignments continue ahead of the 2027 elections.
