The New Nigeria Peoples Party has announced that its former presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, will not be allowed to contest under the party’s platform in the 2027 presidential election. The position was made known by the party’s National Secretary, Ogini Olaposi, in a statement released in Lagos.
According to the party, the 2027 presidential ticket is open only to registered members who meet its requirements. Olaposi explained that Kwankwaso’s case is different because of unresolved issues between the NNPP and the Kwankwasiyya Movement, which supported the party during the 2023 elections.
He said the party entered into an agreement with the Kwankwasiyya Movement in 2022 to contest the general elections, but the arrangement ended after the polls. After the election, the NNPP accused some members of the movement of actions against the party, which led to the expulsion of senior figures, including Kwankwaso and some of his close allies. The party stated that these expulsions remain in place.
The NNPP also said that, unlike in 2023 when the presidential ticket was reserved for Kwankwaso, the 2027 ticket will be contested by interested members. The party disclosed that some aspirants, including Nigerians based abroad, have already shown interest, while talks with other political groups remain possible.
Olaposi dismissed claims that Kwankwaso still commands wide support across the country, saying his influence is limited and has reduced even within Kano State, where some members of his movement have joined other parties. He added that the ruling party plans to rely on its record in government for the next election cycle.
The NNPP further warned that any political party seeking an alliance for 2027 must deal directly with its National Working Committee, which it described as the only body allowed to make such decisions. The party insisted that Kwankwaso and his group have no authority to negotiate on its behalf.
The development comes amid reports that opposition figures, including Kwankwaso, are being courted by other parties ahead of the 2027 general elections, following his recent comments about joining any coalition willing to offer him a presidential or vice-presidential slot.
