Nyesom Wike has dismissed attacks over his political decisions, saying his path in politics was a clear and personal choice driven by interest, power, and the will of the people. He spoke on Sunday at Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, his political base, during the final leg of his thank-you tour, where a large crowd of supporters and political leaders gathered.
The former Rivers State governor explained that he deliberately chose politics as a career and did not intend to pursue other professions. He asked critics to respect his choice and allow him to operate within the political space without resentment.
Wike said his visit to Obio/Akpor was to appreciate the people for their support, noting that gratitude remains a core value of leadership. He stressed that political engagement is not guided by emotions but by interests that serve the people.
He stated that political power is earned through strength and participation, adding that Obio/Akpor plays a key role in determining electoral outcomes in Rivers State. According to him, the local government area has always influenced who becomes governor and senator in the state, and its voting strength cannot be ignored.
The minister also addressed calls for his removal, stating that such decisions rest solely with the president. He said President Bola Tinubu understands his value and contributions and does not need outside pressure to decide his role.
Wike added that Tinubu’s administration has benefited Rivers State and that the people would respond with support during the 2027 presidential election.
Earlier, the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Kingsley Chinda, said Obio/Akpor controls a large portion of the state’s registered voters, giving it strong political influence. He assured Wike of the loyalty of the people and their readiness to follow his political direction.
The chairman of the local government council, Gift Worlu, praised Wike’s record in public service and credited past political support for the benefits currently enjoyed by the area. He said the people were clear about their choice in the next presidential election.
The Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, also pledged continued support for Wike and promised that the state would deliver even stronger backing for President Tinubu in 2027.
