President Bola Tinubu and Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun on Tuesday expressed sadness over the death of Madam Lucia Onabanjo, the wife of late Chief Olabisi Onabanjo, the first civilian governor of Ogun State. Madam Onabanjo passed away on January 11, 2026, at the age of 100.
Her death was announced by her daughter, Olubukunola Onabanjo, who said the family was grateful for her long life and the values she passed down through generations. The family described her as a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose life was shaped by faith, care for others, and resilience.
Chief Olabisi Onabanjo governed Ogun State between 1979 and 1983. He was also known nationwide as a journalist and public commentator before his death in 1990.
In a statement released by his media aide, President Tinubu described Madam Onabanjo as a strong pillar who stood firmly with her husband during his years in public service. He noted her interest in the welfare of children and women and urged both the Ogun State Government and the public to preserve her record of kindness and support for the less privileged. The President also prayed for comfort for her family.
Governor Abiodun, in his own message issued through his spokesperson, described her death as the close of a long chapter in the state’s history. He recalled her role alongside her husband during the struggle for democracy and her steady support for social justice and human rights. He added that she raised children and grandchildren who have made their mark in different professions and prayed for her peaceful rest.
Madam Lucia Onabanjo’s life, which spanned a full century, remains closely tied to Ogun State’s political and social history and to the values of service and family life she upheld until her death.
