The operatives of the Department of State Services took former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, back into custody in Abuja shortly after his release from Kuje Correctional Centre.
Malami was re-arrested moments after he completed his bail conditions and stepped out of the prison facility in the Federal Capital Territory. Security sources said the action followed a new investigation being handled by the DSS, separate from the matter for which he was earlier detained.
Reports indicate that the fresh probe is linked to the discovery of weapons at Malami’s country home in Kebbi State during a search carried out by officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. The finding reportedly triggered renewed interest from the secret police, leading to his immediate re-arrest.
Earlier in the week, a Federal High Court granted bail to Malami, his wife, and his son, setting bail at ₦500 million for each of them with two sureties. Despite meeting all the court’s requirements, the former minister did not regain his freedom for long before being taken away again.
Before the development, Malami had raised concerns that the DSS was monitoring activities around the correctional centre with plans to arrest him again once he was released. His media aide had also informed the public of surveillance activities around the prison.
As of the time of reporting, the DSS has not issued an official statement on the re-arrest, while investigations linked to the new allegations are said to be ongoing.
