The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees in the Federal Capital Territory has instructed its members to commence an indefinite strike starting Tuesday, January 27, 2026, in support of workers of the Federal Capital Territory Administration who are already on strike.
The decision followed an emergency meeting of the union’s State Executive Council held in Abuja on Monday. The resolution was jointly issued by the union’s FCT President, Ibrahim Kabi, and its Secretary, Sa’ad Abdulmumini.
The union explained that the action aligns with directives from the Nigeria Labour Congress and the national leadership of NULGE. It added that the concerns raised by the Joint Union Action Committee of the FCTA, including unpaid allowances and outstanding promotion arrears, also affect workers in the Area Councils.
NULGE stated that all its members across the six Area Councils are to stop work from the announced date. The union noted that the strike is also meant to push for unresolved demands currently under discussion between the FCT Minister and a ministerial committee.
Union leaders urged members to stay firm, saying the decision to embark on the strike was taken to protect the welfare and rights of local government workers within the territory.
FCTA workers, under the Joint Union Action Committee, began their own indefinite strike on January 19 following unresolved welfare concerns. The National Industrial Court later issued an interim order asking the workers to suspend the strike after an application by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike. The court fixed January 27 for further hearing on the matter.
