The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in Kogi State, Muhammed Gambo, has said the party is adjusting its internal structure to allow more women take part in politics and decision-making.
Gambo spoke in Lokoja on Thursday during a consultative forum focused on women and political parties. The event was held to promote inclusion and improve women’s involvement in elections. It was organised by the Centre for Policy and Innovation in partnership with the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room, with support from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.
While speaking as a panel member, Gambo said the party plans to introduce reserved positions for women to ensure they are properly represented within party structures. He also said women who are already active in politics would be paired with experienced politicians to guide and support them through mentorship.
He explained that the party supports training programs, workshops, and access to resources to help women build confidence and develop skills needed for political participation. According to him, cultural practices that discourage women from politics must be addressed, adding that the party is already working with communities to change long-held beliefs and attitudes.
Gambo also advised that flexible political schedules should be encouraged so women can balance public duties with family responsibilities. He said such adjustments would make politics more accessible to more women.
He commended the organisers of the forum, noting that the training came at a time when political inclusion is urgently needed. He added that during past PDP-led governments, women had more space in governance compared to the present situation.
Gambo assured participants that under his leadership, the party in Kogi State is determined to restore opportunities for women and young people, who form the largest group of voters in elections.
