The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has said Rivers State is taking the lead among states in organising political support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.
Wike spoke in Port Harcourt on Friday during the inauguration of senatorial and local government coordinators of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors, a group formed to support the Tinubu administration ahead of the next general elections.
He said the event marked the start of active political engagement toward 2027, adding that the mobilisation process would soon move to the ward level across the state. According to him, Rivers State had already taken practical steps to show loyalty to the President, noting that support must be proven through action rather than statements.
The minister also raised concerns about the position of the state governor, saying political rewards are linked to visible commitment and alignment. He added that loyalty, not financial strength, determines political benefit and recognition.
Wike explained that the Renewed Hope Ambassadors initiative brought together people across party lines and thanked President Tinubu for backing the coalition, which he said helped in producing candidates for the February 21 by-elections in Khana Constituency II and Ahoada West Constituency II. He encouraged voters to participate fully in the elections and support the candidates regardless of party affiliation, adding that buses were provided to aid mobilisation for the Renewed Hope agenda.
The Rivers State Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors, Desmond Akawor, expressed appreciation to members of both the Peoples Democratic Party and the All Progressives Congress for their turnout, saying the large crowd showed wide support for the President in the state.
Speaking on behalf of federal government political appointees from Rivers State, Senator George Sekibo assured the President of continued backing, noting that the administration had carried out major projects in the state while appointing several Rivers indigenes into key positions.
Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Kingsley Chinda, who spoke for the National Assembly caucus, also pledged support for Tinubu’s second-term bid, saying the state would improve on its performance from the 2023 elections.
The Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martins Amaewhule, and former PDP state chairman, Felix Obuah, likewise declared support for the President. Chairmen of both the PDP and APC in Rivers State, Aaron Chukwuemeka and Tony Okocha, said their parties were already mobilising ahead of the 2027 polls.
