The Labour Party has said it will not be discouraged by the judgment of the Federal High Court in Abuja or by the removal of the names of its executives from the Independent National Electoral Commission’s online portal. The party said these developments would not stop its preparations for the 2027 general election.
The party made its position known through its National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, who said the Labour Party was already taking steps to challenge the ruling at the appellate court. According to the party, it is confident that the decision of the lower court will be overturned.
The Labour Party also urged Nigerians to speak out against what it described as the growing control of democracy by a small group of powerful individuals. It warned that unchecked political ambition and abuse of power could harm the country’s democratic system.
The party said some people celebrating the recent developments were doing so because they believed they would benefit from the situation, adding that such actions had in the past weakened democratic institutions. It maintained that its members should remain calm while the legal process continues.
The Labour Party restated that its foundation is built on social democracy and collective leadership. It said the party’s constitution does not allow one individual to appoint officials at all levels, from the national leadership to state and ward executives. According to the party, such actions go against its values and amount to a misuse of power.
The party also questioned the process that led to the appointment of a caretaker committee, stating that it did not follow laid-down procedures. It added that proper notice was not given as required by the party constitution and the Electoral Act.
Despite the ongoing dispute, the Labour Party said it remains focused on reclaiming its internal structure and strengthening its organisation ahead of the 2027 elections.
