The Wike-backed caretaker committee of the Peoples Democratic Party has moved the party’s national convention to March 29 and 30. The convention was earlier fixed for March 28 and 29 but was adjusted after further discussions by the party leadership.
Alongside the date change, the caretaker committee dissolved the South-West, North-West, and Plateau State zonal committees. Caretaker teams will be appointed to manage the affairs of these zones. The committee also confirmed that the timetable earlier approved for ward, state, and zonal congresses remains in force.
Party officials explained that consultations are still ongoing before announcing the convention planning committee. The aim is to allow more party members, including those returning to the party, to be involved in the planning process. The leadership said it wants a convention that carries along all members.
The development comes after a Federal High Court ruling in Ibadan that set aside the PDP national convention held in November 2025 and restrained the officers that emerged from acting in those roles. The court decision deepened the leadership crisis within the party.
Before the judgment, PDP governors had supported the Ibadan convention, but the Wike-aligned group insisted it was still in charge and later set up a 13-member caretaker committee with a 60-day mandate. The dispute led both factions to seek recognition from the electoral body, which declined to approve either side.
While the faction led by Tanimu Turaki has announced plans to challenge the court ruling, the Wike-backed group has welcomed the judgment and continues preparations for the rescheduled convention as the party works toward resolving its internal crisis ahead of future elections.
