The New Nigeria People’s Party has said it has no connection with Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso following his claim that he helped arrange a meeting between Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf and some Supreme Court judges in 2019. The party said the claim has created public controversy and does not concern the NNPP.
In a statement released over the weekend by its National Secretary, Oginni Olaposi Sunday, the party explained that Kwankwaso was not a member of the NNPP in 2019 when the alleged incident took place. It stated that he only joined the party shortly before the 2023 general elections, along with some other political figures.
The NNPP said any attempt to link the party to the issue was wrong and asked the Nigerian Bar Association to remove its name from any petition sent to the Inspector-General of Police concerning the matter. According to the party, Kwankwaso could not have acted on its behalf at the time because he was not part of its structure.
The party also clarified that Kwankwaso was not among the founders of the NNPP. It identified Dr Boniface Okechukwu Aniebonam as the founder and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, stressing that claims suggesting otherwise were false.
It further accused Kwankwaso of trying to take control of the party after joining, including changing its logo and colours to match his Kwankwasiyya movement without approval from the party’s leadership or trustees. The NNPP recalled that disagreements arising from these actions led to internal legal battles, one of which was dismissed by a High Court in Abuja.
Reaffirming its position, the NNPP said Kwankwaso was expelled from the party shortly after the 2023 elections for misconduct and no longer holds any position within the party. It added that related matters are under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in Abuja.
The party concluded by restating its current leadership structure and warned that Kwankwaso should no longer be referred to as a leader or member of the NNPP.
