The All Progressives Congress has announced plans to grow its membership base beyond 20 million people across Nigeria as its electronic registration exercise approaches 12 million entries. The party disclosed that more than 11 million members have already been captured in its digital register, with the figure steadily increasing.
The APC National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, made this known during a television appearance on Sunday while responding to concerns that the party’s earlier projection of about 12.5 million members was unrealistic. He explained that the registration exercise remains open and ongoing, noting that the party has no intention of stopping it.
According to him, although the APC plans to print its membership register to meet timelines ahead of its convention and submission to the Independent National Electoral Commission, the process of registering new members will continue beyond that stage. He said this approach allows the party to grow while also meeting official requirements.
Yilwatda explained that the electronic system captures detailed personal information of members, including national identity numbers, addresses, wards, polling units and local government areas. He said this makes it impossible for non-Nigerians to be included in the register and ensures that every member can be clearly identified.
He added that the digital database would help the party strengthen grassroots mobilisation, plan campaigns more effectively and conduct internal research. According to him, the data could allow candidates to directly reach verified party members in specific wards and, in some cases, rely mainly on party members to win elections.
The APC chairman also noted that the register would support policy planning and political analysis across different levels of the country without the need for extensive physical fieldwork, making party operations more efficient as future elections approach.
