CJN to swear in Justice Oyewole on Wednesday

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, will on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, swear in Justice Joseph Oyewole as a Justice of the Supreme Court at the Supreme Court complex in Abuja.

The ceremony will take place at 2 pm inside Courtroom Two of the apex court as part of moves to fill vacancies on the bench.

Justice Oyewole is joining the Supreme Court from the Court of Appeal, where he served as a Justice and also presided over the Enugu Division before his elevation.

His appointment followed a recommendation by the National Judicial Council at its 110th meeting held on January 13, 2026, under the leadership of the Chief Justice of Nigeria.

At that meeting, the council also recommended 35 other judicial officers for various positions across the country.

A statement issued on Sunday by the Director of Information and Public Relations of the Supreme Court, Dr Festus Akande, confirmed the date and venue of the swearing-in.

The statement noted that the addition of Oyewole to the Supreme Court bench forms part of ongoing steps to strengthen the court and improve its ability to handle cases brought before it.

Before his appointment, Oyewole had years of experience at the appellate court, including his role as Presiding Justice of the Enugu Division.

With his move to the Supreme Court, he becomes one of the justices responsible for deciding final appeals and constitutional matters in the country.

The Supreme Court also called on invited guests to comply with the court’s security guidelines and established procedures during the ceremony.

The court restated its duty to uphold justice, fairness and judicial independence in the discharge of its responsibilities to Nigerians.
