ADC Conducts Primaries in 15 Plateau LGAs Ahead of Council Polls

The African Democratic Congress in Plateau State has conducted its party primaries in 15 out of the 17 local government areas in the state as preparation continues for the council elections scheduled for September 9.

The exercise was organised across the affected local governments to choose candidates who will represent the party in the upcoming polls.

The state chairman of the party, Hanatu Gagara, disclosed this while speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria. She explained that the primaries were completed successfully in most parts of the state and that the process went on peacefully in the councils where the exercise took place.

According to her, the primaries could not be conducted in Mikang Local Government Area and Langtang South Local Government Area. She said the reason was that individuals who intended to contest in those areas obtained their nomination forms after the closing date for the sale of forms had already passed.

The party leadership noted that although the exercise did not hold in the two local government areas earlier, the situation may still change following a new development.

The Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission has reportedly extended the period for the conduct of primaries in line with provisions in the updated Electoral Act.

Gagara explained that the party had only recently received communication from the electoral commission about the extension, and the process to review the cases of the affected aspirants had not started yet.

Party officials are expected to examine the situation and decide on the next step for the two councils where the primaries did not initially take place.

She also expressed optimism about the party’s chances in the forthcoming council elections. According to her, the ADC has selected candidates it believes are capable of representing the party effectively in both chairmanship and councillorship contests.

The party chairman added that the number of people joining the party in the state has been increasing, with some individuals leaving other political parties to join the ADC. She said this development has strengthened the party’s confidence as preparations continue for the September elections.

Gagara further revealed that the party’s electronic membership registration exercise is ongoing across Plateau State. She explained that members have been actively participating in the process as the party continues its internal activities ahead of future congresses.

Officials have been deployed to different local government areas to supervise the registration process and ensure that members are properly captured in the system.

The party leadership also encouraged both old and new members to visit their ward and local government offices to confirm and validate their membership as the exercise continues across the state.
