PDP Sets for March Convention, Pushes Unity After Crisis

Leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party on Monday, March 23, 2026, said preparations are in place for the party’s national convention scheduled for March 29 and 30, as they called for unity and reconciliation among members ahead of the event.

The position was made known during the party’s 107th National Executive Committee meeting, where the National Chairman of the National Caretaker Working Committee, Abdulrahman Mohammed, described the coming convention as a key moment that will shape the party’s next phase. He said the gathering would go beyond routine activities and would help determine the party’s future direction.

He explained that the party had made progress after going through legal and political disputes in recent times. According to him, efforts by members to follow due process and engage in dialogue have helped stabilise the party and rebuild confidence among supporters. He added that the party is working towards unity, noting that no group should see itself as defeated as all members share a common goal of rebuilding the organisation.

Mohammed also spoke on the recent congresses held at ward, local government, state and zonal levels across the country, stating that they were largely peaceful and showed the party’s commitment to internal democracy. He urged members to remain disciplined and united as the convention approaches, reminding them that the party must act as one body.

He further acknowledged the role of key figures in the party, including Nyesom Wike, noting that their efforts have helped maintain stability during difficult periods. He called on members to conduct themselves properly during the convention, as the public is watching the party’s actions closely.

Also speaking at the meeting, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, said the party was at a point where careful decisions are needed. He commended members for the successful congresses and pointed to the ongoing electronic membership registration as a step towards improving the party’s structure and operations. He noted that having a reliable membership system would help in planning and strengthen trust within the party.

On the issue of zoning, Ohuabunwa advised leaders to consider the recommendations of the committee with fairness and a willingness to accommodate different interests. He said disagreements are normal but should be handled in a way that keeps the party united.

Other party leaders also shared their views at the meeting, expressing confidence in the strength of the PDP despite recent challenges. Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro said the party remains active and capable of competing, while House of Representatives Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda called for unity and selfless service from members.

In addition, the Chairman of the PDP State Chairmen Forum, Austine Nwachukwu, noted that membership at the grassroots level is increasing, driven by the ongoing registration exercise.

The party leadership maintained that unity, reconciliation and discipline will guide its actions as it moves towards the convention, which is expected to shape its leadership structure and prepare it for future elections.
