APC Convention: Tinubu, Shettima, Governors Storm Abuja

On Friday night in Abuja, Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima attended the 8th National Convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC), which officially started at Eagle Square around 8:15 p.m., drawing top party leaders, government officials, and delegates from across the country.

The event, held in the Federal Capital Territory, brought together key figures including Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, alongside governors, ministers, lawmakers, and party members.

The convention is aimed at selecting new members of the party’s National Working Committee and shaping the party’s direction ahead of future elections.

The gathering took place under tight security, which affected movement within Abuja. Security personnel blocked several roads leading to the venue, making access difficult for many attendees. Journalists covering the event were also affected, as some were stopped at checkpoints despite having accreditation, while others had to walk long distances to reach the venue.

Reports from the scene indicated that some journalists faced threats and were denied entry by security officials. Even those who managed to get inside were later asked to leave certain areas after disagreements with party supporters.

The convention followed a consensus approach for many of the party positions, with several candidates cleared without opposition. Among those expected to take key roles is Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda as National Chairman. Other positions, including Deputy National Chairman (North) and National Secretary, also had candidates lined up for confirmation.

However, not all positions were settled without contest. Some offices, such as Deputy National Chairman (South) and National Welfare Secretary, remained open to competition between different aspirants, showing that not all decisions were unanimous.

While preparations had been made to ensure a smooth exercise, the strict security measures and the treatment of journalists affected the overall atmosphere of the event, raising concerns about access and coverage as the convention progressed.
