US Lawmaker Warns of Strain on Relations Over Plateau and Kaduna Attacks

Residents of Plateau and Kaduna states are reeling after deadly attacks on Palm Sunday left dozens dead and many injured.

In Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State, gunmen attacked Angwan Rukuba community, killing at least 14 people according to police, while local sources reported higher numbers. In Kaduna State, armed attackers stormed a wedding in Kahir village, killing 13 people and abducting several others.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang visited the scene in Plateau, assuring residents that security agencies were pursuing the attackers. The state imposed a 48-hour curfew in Jos North to prevent further incidents. Residents were urged to remain calm, provide information to security officials, and follow safety directives.

The University of Jos postponed examinations scheduled for the following days due to the security situation, advising students and staff to remain alert and avoid unnecessary movement.

The Plateau chapter of Jama’atu Nasril Islam described the attacks as a serious setback to peace in the state and called for calm and restraint to avoid worsening tensions. Security agencies were urged to investigate the attacks thoroughly and bring the perpetrators to justice.

In the United States, Congressman Riley Moore raised concerns that repeated attacks on Christians in Nigeria could affect diplomatic relations. He urged Nigerian authorities to increase security ahead of religious events and warned of possible consequences if attacks continue.

The attacks occurred at night, causing panic as residents fled and gunmen looted local shops. Security forces in both states launched search operations to locate the attackers and rescue the kidnapped victims. Kaduna State officials visited the injured at hospitals while communities under ongoing threat remained on high alert.

Local groups called for citizens to have access to self-defence tools amid repeated attacks, arguing that residents should be able to protect themselves while law enforcement works to maintain security.

Governors of northern states reaffirmed their support for the federal government’s security plans and pledged continued cooperation to maintain peace across the region.
