Court rejects bid to stop Ireti Kingibe from ADC activities

On Thursday in Abuja, Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court declined a request by some members of the African Democratic Congress in Wuse Ward, Federal Capital Territory, to stop Senator Ireti Kingibe from taking part in party activities after her alleged suspension, ruling instead that she must be properly informed of the case and allowed to respond before any decision is made.

The application was filed by ward members who claimed to be acting on behalf of the party structure in their area.

They asked the court to issue an interim order preventing the senator from presenting herself as a party member, attending meetings, or carrying out any role linked to the party while the case is ongoing. They also sought to stop her from interfering in the affairs of the ward leadership and its records.

The court, however, held that such a request could not be granted without hearing from the other side. The judge stated that decisions in political matters must follow due process and fairness, which requires that the defendant be given an opportunity to defend herself. He directed the plaintiffs to serve all court documents on the senator so she can prepare her response.

The case was brought by Okezuo Godfrey Anayo and Isaiah Ojonugwa Samuel, who said they were acting for themselves and other ward members. They claimed the senator was suspended in March over alleged misconduct, anti-party actions, and issues relating to party records. They also alleged that despite the suspension, she continued to act as a member of the party and hold activities linked to it.

During the court session, a lawyer who said he represented the senator informed the court that a preliminary objection had already been filed against the suit and served on the plaintiffs’ counsel.

The judge fixed April 20, 2026, for both parties to appear in court for further hearing, where all pending applications in the matter will be considered.
