Nigeria loses ambassador-designate to Algeria at 50

The Federal Government has announced the death of Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to Algeria, Mohammed Mahmud Lele, who died at the age of 50 after a prolonged illness. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs made the disclosure in Abuja on Wednesday, stating that the diplomat passed away in Ankara, Türkiye, in the early hours of April 19.

The ministry said Lele died while serving as Director of the Middle East and Gulf Division and shortly after his appointment as ambassador-designate to Algeria was confirmed by the Senate. His death comes at a time he was preparing to take up the diplomatic assignment.

According to the ministry, Lele had built a long career in Nigeria’s foreign service, serving in different diplomatic missions, including postings in Berlin, Lomé and Riyadh. Before his latest appointment, he was involved in managing key aspects of Nigeria’s foreign relations through his role at the ministry.

Officials described his death as a major loss to the country’s diplomatic community, noting that he was known for his experience and commitment to service.

The Permanent Secretary of the ministry received his remains at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja before burial arrangements were concluded.

Born in Gamawa, Bauchi State, in 1976, Lele studied Economics at Bayero University, Kano, before joining the foreign service. Over the years, he held several responsibilities within and outside Nigeria and was regarded as an experienced career diplomat.

His remains were buried in Kano on Wednesday in line with Islamic rites. The ministry extended condolences to his family, colleagues and the government and people of Bauchi State, mourning his passing and describing it as a painful loss for the nation.
