Mali defence Minister Killed in Attacks

Mali’s Defence Minister, General Sadio Camara, was reported killed following coordinated attacks on military targets across the country, marking a major blow to the military-led government amid rising insecurity.

The attacks, which became known on Sunday, came a day after armed groups launched assaults on several locations, including Camara’s residence in Kati, a major military town near the capital, Bamako.

Reports indicated that attackers struck the residence during a broader wave of violence involving simultaneous operations in different parts of the country. Kati, known as one of Mali’s most secured military locations and home to key government figures, was among the targets hit during the attacks.

Camara was regarded as a powerful figure in Mali’s ruling military establishment and played a major role in the coups that brought the current authorities to power in 2020 and 2021.

The attack on his residence was reportedly carried out during a suicide car bomb assault linked to fighters from Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin, also known as JNIM, working alongside Tuareg rebels of the Azawad Liberation Front.

The broader attacks also hit Bamako’s international airport and other cities in central and northern Mali, in what has been described as one of the most coordinated assaults the country has faced in recent years.

JNIM later claimed responsibility for the operations and said the attacks were conducted jointly with the separatist group.

The development adds to concerns over worsening security in Mali, where authorities have battled Islamist militants and armed separatist groups for years despite repeated military operations.

Camara’s reported death could have major political and security consequences for the military government, given his influence within the ruling structure and the armed forces.

The attacks also raise fresh questions about security around key military installations after heavily guarded locations came under assault.

Mali has faced prolonged instability driven by insurgency, separatist conflict and political upheaval, and the latest violence is expected to deepen concerns about the country’s fragile security situation.
