APC NWC screens Abiodun for Senate bid

On Friday, May 8, 2026, in Abuja, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun appeared before the National Working Committee screening panel of the All Progressives Congress as part of the process for aspirants seeking elective positions ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The exercise took place at the party’s national secretariat and was part of internal checks for those contesting on the APC platform.
Abiodun is seeking the party’s ticket for the Ogun East Senatorial District after completing his current tenure as governor.

The screening was carried out to assess his qualifications and readiness for the legislative race under the party’s rules for aspirants.

After the exercise, he said his interest in the Senate race is driven by his desire to contribute to development and provide representation for the people of Ogun East. He also expressed appreciation to party leaders and members for their support of his political ambition.

Before the screening, Abiodun had already been adopted as a consensus candidate for the senatorial seat during a meeting of APC stakeholders in Ijebu-Ode. The decision was reached after consultations involving party leaders across the district, including former lawmakers and other political figures.

At the meeting, stakeholders reportedly agreed to support his candidacy based on his experience in public office and his role in the development of the state. The governor had earlier submitted his nomination forms at the APC national secretariat in preparation for the screening and primary process.

Party officials explained that the screening is part of the APC’s internal procedures used to review and approve aspirants before primary elections are held.

Abiodun’s appearance before the panel is one of several steps leading up to the selection of candidates for the upcoming elections.
