IGP visits Oyo communities after deadly attack

Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, visited Oyo State on Saturday following the deadly attack and abduction incident that occurred in Oriire Local Government Area in the early hours of Friday, May 15, 2026, as security agencies stepped up efforts to rescue victims and restore calm in the affected communities.

The police chief visited the area after reports of the attack which left some residents dead and others abducted by armed men. During the visit, the IGP expressed concern over the incident and sympathised with families who lost relatives during the attack.

Disu was accompanied by the Commissioner of Police in Kwara State, Ojo Adekimi, because of the close link between communities in Oriire and neighbouring areas in Kwara State. The Commissioner of Police in charge of the Schools Protection Squad, Abayomi Shogunle, also joined the visit.

While in Oyo State, the Inspector-General met with the Commissioner of Police in the state, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, alongside other security officials. The meeting focused on updates regarding rescue operations, intelligence gathering and security deployment across the affected areas.

The police boss assured residents, parents and guardians that security agencies were working together to secure the release of those abducted during the attack. He said the Nigeria Police Force and other agencies had increased search-and-rescue operations while also expanding intelligence and tactical activities in the area.

Disu described the attack as a serious security threat and directed the deployment of more tactical personnel and intelligence teams to strengthen operations in the affected communities and nearby forests where the attackers may be hiding.

Security presence has since been increased in the area as authorities continue efforts to track down the attackers and prevent further violence.
