Tinubu’s aide calls out Nasboi over controversial terrorist footage

Dada Olusegun, Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Social Media, criticised popular content creator and comedian Nasboi over a video shared on social media.

The presidential aide accused the entertainer of circulating footage that could create fear among Nigerians despite claims that the video was not connected to events in the country.

The controversy began after Nasboi posted a video showing armed men on motorcycles carrying out an attack in what appeared to be a rural environment. The video was accompanied by a message directed at President Bola Tinubu and quickly attracted attention online.

Reacting to the post, Olusegun argued that the footage had been sourced from another account which reportedly identified the armed men as terrorists operating in the Republic of Benin. According to him, the content creator presented the video in a way that could mislead members of the public into believing the incident occurred in Nigeria.

The presidential aide expressed concern over the influence of social media personalities and the potential consequences of sharing unverified content. He maintained that public figures with large audiences have a responsibility to verify information before posting it online, especially when dealing with security-related issues.

Olusegun stated that although Nigeria continues to face security challenges, spreading inaccurate information could worsen public anxiety and create unnecessary panic. He argued that content shared on social media should be handled carefully to avoid misleading people.

The dispute comes amid ongoing discussions about insecurity in parts of West Africa, where terrorist groups and armed militants have carried out attacks in several countries. Reports indicate that Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin, a group linked to al-Qaeda, recently claimed responsibility for an attack on military positions in the Republic of Benin near the border with Burkina Faso.

Footage of that attack was reportedly released by the group and circulated online. However, there has been no independent confirmation that the video shared by Nasboi originated from Nigeria or was connected to any incident within the country.

As of the time of the development, the content creator had not publicly responded to the criticism from the presidential aide. The incident has nevertheless generated debate on social media, with users discussing the responsibility of public figures when sharing information related to security matters.
