Kwankwaso Threatens NDC Exit Amid Controversy

Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso is reportedly considering leaving the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) following a dispute over candidate nominations in Kano State. The development emerged after the party announced changes to a number of candidates earlier submitted by the Kwankwasiyya faction ahead of upcoming elections.

The controversy began when the NDC leadership in Kano revised the list of candidates previously presented by members of the Kwankwasiyya movement. The changes were contained in a document issued by the Kano State Chairman of the party, Hussaini Isah Mairiga, and circulated to key party leaders, including National Leader Seriake Dickson, Kwankwaso and the party’s North-West leadership.

According to the revised arrangement, several new names were approved for various federal constituency seats across Kano State. The changes also affected candidates seeking election into the Kano State House of Assembly in constituencies such as Dala, Tarauni, Kumbotso, Ungogo and Dawakin Kudu.

Party officials explained that the adjustments were made to comply with an existing agreement reached between the original NDC structure and the Kwankwasiyya bloc after both groups began working together within the party.

Under the arrangement, elective positions and party offices were expected to be shared according to a 60-40 formula.

The agreement reportedly allocated 60 percent of positions to the Kwankwasiyya faction while the remaining 40 percent was reserved for members of the existing NDC structure. Party leaders said the recent changes were necessary because the original candidate list did not properly reflect that understanding.

The decision, however, appears to have created fresh tension within the party. Reports indicate that Kwankwaso and some of his supporters are unhappy with the replacement of candidates linked to the Kwankwasiyya movement. The situation has fuelled speculation that the former governor may reconsider his future in the party if the disagreement remains unresolved.

The dispute adds to growing concerns about internal divisions within the NDC, particularly in Kano State where both factions have been negotiating the sharing of party positions and election tickets. Political observers believe the outcome of the disagreement could influence the party’s strength and unity ahead of future electoral contests.

Although reports suggest Kwankwaso may leave the party, no official announcement confirming such a decision had been made at the time the matter became public. Likewise, party leaders have continued efforts to manage the situation and maintain stability within the organisation.

The latest development comes amid a series of internal debates within the NDC over candidate selection, party leadership and the implementation of agreements reached between various groups.

As discussions continue, party members and supporters will be watching closely to see whether a resolution can be reached or whether the disagreement will lead to further divisions.
