Igbo Youths Back Tinubu, Seek More Federal Appointments

Igbo youth leaders and stakeholders from across the South-East have declared their support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration while urging the Federal Government to create more opportunities for young people from the region to serve in federal agencies and government institutions.

The position was announced during the Igbo Youth Leaders and Stakeholders Convention held in Awka, Anambra State. The gathering brought together youth groups, socio-cultural organisations and community representatives from different parts of the region.

Speaking at the event, the convener of the convention, Chukwuma Okpalaezeukwu, commended the Federal Government for establishing the South East Development Commission and for ongoing infrastructure projects in the region. He said the creation of the commission had given many people hope that long-standing development concerns in the South-East would receive greater attention.

He also acknowledged ongoing road construction and other public projects being carried out in different parts of the region. According to him, while the efforts are appreciated, more should be done to ensure that qualified young professionals from the South-East are given opportunities to participate in national governance.

The stakeholders maintained that many youths from the region possess the skills, creativity and experience needed to contribute to public service and national growth. They therefore appealed for broader representation in federal agencies, parastatals and other government institutions.

In the communiqué issued after the convention, participants stressed the need for transparency and accountability in the operations of the South East Development Commission. They stated that public interest and scrutiny of the commission’s activities should be viewed as part of efforts to ensure good governance and effective service delivery.

The gathering also adopted a proposal for the creation of an Integrated Youth Development Master Plan for the South-East. According to the delegates, the initiative would provide a structured approach to tackling challenges affecting young people through programmes focused on employment, entrepreneurship, education and productivity.

The convention also addressed recent calls for the removal of the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the South East Development Commission, Mark Okoye. The participants rejected such demands, arguing that the commission is still in its early stage and requires stability to carry out its responsibilities effectively.

According to the stakeholders, leadership continuity is important as the commission works to establish programmes and projects aimed at improving development across the region.

The issue of security also featured during the discussions. Participants acknowledged the efforts of South-East governors in addressing security challenges but urged them to intensify measures aimed at protecting lives and property.

The delegates stated that economic growth and development can only thrive in an environment where residents and investors feel safe. They added that security should remain a shared responsibility involving governments, communities and other stakeholders.

The convention concluded with a pledge by the participants to work with both state governments and the Federal Government in promoting peace, development and opportunities for young people across the South-East.

The communiqué was endorsed by representatives of several youth and socio-cultural organisations, including leaders of youth councils, student bodies and Ohanaeze Ndigbo-affiliated groups from different states in the region.
