Police, Oyo LG Reject Claims of Victims’ Release After Igboho Ultimatum

Conflicting accounts emerged in Oyo State over the fate of a woman, her children, and a sibling who were abducted by gunmen in Igbope. The confusion followed the circulation of videos showing residents celebrating alongside Yoruba Nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho.

The celebrations led many to believe that the abducted family members had been released shortly after Igboho issued a two-hour ultimatum to suspected kidnappers and leaders within the Fulani community, demanding the victims’ freedom.

However, local government officials and the police have dismissed those reports, maintaining that the victims remain in captivity.

The Chairman of Oorelope Local Government, Jacob Ogundiran, described the reports of the victims’ release as false. He stated that the local council had verified the situation and confirmed that the abducted individuals had not regained their freedom.

Ogundiran urged residents to rely only on information from credible and official sources, warning against spreading unverified reports that could create confusion within the community. He added that security agencies were still working to secure the safe rescue of the victims and appreciated residents and community leaders for their cooperation and support.

The Oyo State Police Command also denied claims that the victims had been freed. Police spokesperson, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, said rescue efforts were still ongoing and there was no official confirmation that the hostages had been released.

He also clarified that the kidnapping took place in Igbope and not in Igboho, correcting information that had circulated online following the incident.

The victims were reportedly abducted during a late-night attack carried out by armed men. Reports indicated that the kidnappers initially demanded a ransom of N300 million before later reducing the amount to N150 million.

The incident triggered tension in the area and drew the attention of Sunday Igboho, who publicly condemned the rising cases of kidnapping and insecurity in parts of Oyo State. During a meeting with community representatives and traditional leaders, the activist reportedly expressed concern over repeated abductions and violent attacks in the area.

Following his intervention, videos surfaced online showing residents celebrating, with many believing the abducted family had been released as a result of the ultimatum. The footage quickly spread across social media and fueled reports that the captives had regained their freedom.

Despite the celebrations, both the police and local government authorities have maintained that the victims are still being held by their abductors. They insisted that security operatives remain actively engaged in efforts to locate and rescue the family.

Authorities have therefore urged members of the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information while security agencies continue operations aimed at securing the victims’ safe return.
