PDP faction queries IGP over delay in petition against Anyanwu, Mohammed

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the Nigeria Police Force of failing to respond to its petition against the party’s National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, and factional National Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed, seven days after it was submitted to the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu.

The petition, submitted on June 23, 2026, through Ogbeide Associates, asked the police to investigate Anyanwu and Mohammed over a letter dated November 3, 2025, which was sent to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

According to the petition, the letter wrongly stated that the party’s National Working Committee had suspended Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum as acting national chairman and replaced him with Mohammed.

In a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by Anthony Ehilebo on behalf of the law firm, the faction said it had not received any acknowledgment from the police since the petition was filed. It also stated that neither of the two party officials had been invited for questioning, while no information had been provided on the status of the complaint.

The lawyers compared the situation with the police response to an alleged AI-generated audio clip falsely linked to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. They noted that the police announced an arrest in that matter within about one week of the incident becoming public.

According to the faction, its petition was supported by a Federal High Court judgment, a National Working Committee resolution, official meeting attendance records and a Court of Appeal judgment. Despite these documents, it said the complaint had yet to receive any visible attention from the police.

The faction called on the Inspector-General of Police to confirm that the petition had been received and provide information on the next steps. It also warned that if there is no meaningful response within a reasonable period, it would consider taking legal action to compel the police to act on the matter.

The development is the latest chapter in the leadership dispute within the PDP, which has produced rival groups making separate claims over the control of the party and its affairs.
