Yesufu Urges Opposition to Rally Behind Obi for 2027

Human rights activist Aisha Yesufu has called on opposition political parties to work together behind the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, ahead of the 2027 general election. She made the appeal on Wednesday through a post on her verified X account, saying unity among opposition groups would improve their chances at the polls.

Yesufu explained that supporting Obi should not be seen as abandoning individual political parties or their beliefs. Instead, she said it should be viewed as a practical step towards building a stronger alliance capable of challenging the ruling party in the next presidential election.

She argued that election victories are not determined by the number of vocal supporters but by the ability of political groups to organise themselves and work towards a common goal. According to her, Obi stands out because of his record and should be considered a candidate that can unite different opposition platforms.

The activist also pointed to the outcome of the 2023 presidential election, noting that President Bola Tinubu won with 36 per cent of the votes, while the combined votes of opposition candidates made up the larger share. She said this showed that the opposition already had the numerical advantage if it could overcome internal divisions.

Yesufu expressed concern that disagreements among opposition parties had continued to weaken their chances. She urged politicians, campaign organisers, fundraisers and party strategists across different opposition platforms to work together through a coordinated structure without giving up their individual parties.

According to her, the goal is to build cooperation among opposition groups while allowing each party to retain its identity. She maintained that only a united opposition would be able to present a stronger challenge in the 2027 presidential election.
