Tinubu Commissions Bwari Water Project

President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday commissioned the Bwari Township Water Supply Network Project and assured residents that his administration will provide clean and safe water to all satellite towns in the Federal Capital Territory.

The President, represented by First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu at the ceremony in Bwari, said the project is part of the Renewed Hope Agenda aimed at improving infrastructure and bringing development closer to communities outside Abuja city centre.

Tinubu said access to clean water is a basic need that every resident deserves. He explained that his administration is working to end the long-standing imbalance where major projects were concentrated in the city while satellite towns received little attention. According to him, development should reach every part of the FCT without discrimination.

The President said the newly completed 198-kilometre water pipeline network will supply treated water from the Lower Usuma Dam to Bwari, Ushafa and nearby communities. The project was constructed by China Geo-engineering Construction Limited to improve access to potable water and reduce dependence on untreated sources such as streams and private boreholes.

Tinubu revealed that he approved the project after receiving a proposal from the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. He said the decision was taken to solve the water challenges faced by residents and improve living conditions across the area.

He noted that the project is expected to reduce cases of waterborne diseases, lower the cost of getting clean water and create better opportunities for businesses and residents. He also disclosed that the construction process provided more than 1,600 direct and indirect jobs.

The President assured residents that similar water projects would continue in other satellite towns. He said communities including Kuje, Kwali, Gwagwalada and Abaji would benefit from the ongoing water expansion programme before the end of his administration.

Tinubu commended Wike for carrying out several infrastructure projects across the FCT. He credited the minister for improving internally generated revenue and overseeing numerous development projects, including roads, housing and water schemes.

He also appealed to residents to protect the newly completed facility from vandalism, reminding them that it was built with public funds for the benefit of the people.

Speaking at the event, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike said the Bwari Water Supply Network Project fulfilled the President’s directive to extend basic infrastructure beyond Abuja city. He described it as the third major water project completed under the current administration after the rehabilitation of the Abuja city water system and the recent water project commissioned in Karu.

Wike said the government is giving attention to different sectors and not limiting development to road construction alone. He added that since Tinubu assumed office in 2023, the administration has completed 50 major projects in the FCT and plans to commission 10 more before political campaigns begin next year.

The minister said the progress recorded in the territory has been made possible by the President’s support, noting that such backing has allowed ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure and public services.

FCT Minister of State, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, described the project as another step in improving the welfare of residents. She said it would provide safe drinking water, improve public health and strengthen public confidence in government while supporting efforts to expand essential services across the territory.

Also speaking, Acting Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority, Engr. Richard Yunana Dauda, disclosed that the project was substantially completed ahead of its scheduled December completion date.

He said the water network would improve access to clean water for residents, create employment opportunities and contribute to better health and living standards in Bwari and neighbouring communities.
