Judges’ Welfare Key to Judicial Independence, FCT Chief Judge Says

The Chief Judge of the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Justice Husseini Baba-Yusuf, on Wednesday said better welfare for judicial officers is necessary for a strong and independent judiciary.

He made the remark in Abuja during the commissioning of a newly completed 20-unit Judges’ Quarters, describing the project as an important step toward improving the justice system.

Justice Baba-Yusuf said the housing project, which began less than two years ago, was completed within a short period and reflected the government’s commitment to improving the working and living conditions of judges.

He noted that the project was more than the construction of residential buildings, saying it would help protect the dignity of judicial officers and reduce concerns linked to accommodation and life after service.

According to him, the welfare of judges should not be treated as a personal benefit but as a vital part of building a stable and effective judicial system. He explained that proper housing, security and good working conditions allow judges to carry out their duties without fear or outside influence.

The Chief Judge stated that judicial independence cannot depend only on constitutional provisions. He said it also requires practical support through quality infrastructure, improved welfare and a suitable working environment that enables judges to perform their responsibilities fairly and professionally.

He praised President Bola Tinubu for supporting the project, describing it as another sign of the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening the justice sector. He also commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for initiating and delivering the housing scheme, which he described as an important addition to judicial infrastructure in the country.

Speaking on behalf of judges and workers in the FCT Judiciary, Justice Baba-Yusuf assured residents that the courts would continue to uphold the Constitution and deliver justice fairly and without bias. He also appealed to the FCT Minister to extend similar housing projects to the FCT Sharia Court of Appeal and the Customary Court of Appeal, noting that both courts are important parts of the territory’s judicial system.

He added that similar accommodation projects had already been completed for institutions such as the National Industrial Court, the Code of Conduct Tribunal, the Court of Appeal, the Federal High Court, the Body of Benchers and the Nigerian Law School.

Justice Baba-Yusuf also observed that the FCT High Court now handles more responsibilities as Abuja continues to grow as the country’s political, administrative and commercial centre.

Despite the increasing workload, he assured the public that the judiciary would remain committed to protecting the rule of law and ensuring justice is delivered to all without favour.
