Yesufu Backs Malami Forfeiture, Urges EFCC to Investigate Others

Human rights activist and BringBackOurGirls co-convener, Aisha Yesufu, has urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to extend its anti-corruption investigations to other politicians facing allegations of financial misconduct.

She made the call on Saturday through a post on her verified X account while reacting to the court-ordered forfeiture of assets linked to former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami.

Yesufu’s reaction followed the decision of the Federal High Court in Abuja, which ordered the final forfeiture of 48 properties connected to Malami. The ruling marked another step in the EFCC’s asset recovery efforts involving former public officials.

While welcoming the action taken against Malami, the activist said the commission should not stop there. She argued that many other public office holders have also been linked to financial-related allegations over the years and should be investigated without bias.

According to her, the fight against corruption will only gain public confidence if every suspect is treated equally, regardless of political affiliation or relationship with those in power. She maintained that limiting investigations to a few individuals could create the impression that justice is being applied unfairly.

Yesufu also stated that the EFCC has the ability to investigate more corruption cases and should continue pursuing every credible allegation. She called on the anti-graft agency to remain committed to the rule of law and ensure that all those accused of financial crimes are subjected to the same legal process.

She nevertheless praised the commission for securing the forfeiture order and described the development as a positive move. At the same time, she urged the EFCC to sustain its efforts by widening its investigations and ensuring that no individual is spared if there is evidence of wrongdoing.

The activist concluded that Nigerians expect the anti-corruption campaign to be carried out fairly and consistently, with every case handled on its merit rather than on political considerations.
