The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, will on Saturday, August 29, publish the names of candidates nominated by political parties for the 2027 governorship and state House of Assembly elections.
The publication is part of the commission’s preparations for the February 6, 2027 elections, which will cover governorship contests in 28 states and legislative elections in all 36 states of the country.
The governorship elections will take place in Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Delta, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Enugu, Ebonyi, Abia, Kwara, Benue, Plateau, Niger and Nasarawa states.
Other states scheduled to elect governors in 2027 are Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Taraba, Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, Zamfara, Kebbi and Sokoto.
The eight states of Ondo, Osun, Ekiti, Edo, Bayelsa, Anambra, Imo and Kogi will not participate in the governorship election because their polls were conducted at different periods under Nigeria’s staggered election system.
INEC said the publication of the candidate lists will allow political parties, contestants and members of the public to check the details submitted by the parties and identify any issues before the elections.

The 22 registered political parties are expected to present candidates in several states where the tenure of the current governors will end in 2027. These include Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Yobe, Borno, Adamawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Kwara and Nasarawa.
Political parties taking part in the presidential and National Assembly elections are also expected to submit their final candidate lists to INEC by August 29.
The deadline comes after the August 22 cut-off date for candidates who wanted to withdraw from the 2027 elections.
Under Section 31 of the Electoral Act 2026, a candidate who decides to withdraw after being nominated must submit a written notice to the political party that sponsored the nomination. The notice must be personally submitted by the candidate, signed and accompanied by an affidavit.
The process allows candidates who no longer wish to contest to formally communicate their decision to their political parties before the final lists are released.
INEC is expected to publish the final list of candidates for the presidential and National Assembly elections on September 12. The list will contain the names of those contesting the presidency, Senate and House of Representatives seats.
With the August 29 deadline approaching, political parties are expected to complete outstanding nomination, substitution and related processes before INEC releases the candidates’ details.
The February 6 governorship and state Assembly elections will be part of the wider 2027 general election programme as INEC continues preparations for the polls across the country.
