2027: APC Governors Vow to Deliver Tinubu’s Re-election

The governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress have pledged to work for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in the 2027 general elections, with each governor expected to secure victory for the party in their state.

Imo State Governor and Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, Hope Uzodinma, disclosed this on Thursday after APC governors met with Tinubu in Abuja following the 160th meeting of the National Economic Council.

Uzodinma said the governors had agreed to take charge of the campaign and election efforts across their respective states. He added that each governor would assess what was needed locally to build strong support for Tinubu and ensure effective mobilisation ahead of the election.

He explained that winning the 2027 election would require close cooperation between the federal government, state governments and other leaders of the APC. According to him, the governors would work with the party leadership while taking the lead in campaigning and coordinating activities within their states.

Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule also said the governors would play a major role in the campaign because the elections would be decided across the states rather than in Abuja.

Sule said campaign activities would therefore be organised at the state level, with the various campaign structures expected to work with governors to achieve the party’s objectives.

The meeting between Tinubu and the APC governors also covered the proposed structure of the President’s 2027 Presidential Campaign Council. Uzodinma said the President formally briefed the governors about the council, adding that the governors accepted the arrangement.
Beyond politics, the meeting also focused on governance and ways to reduce the pressure of rising living costs on Nigerians.

Uzodinma said discussions covered food security, agriculture, transportation, job creation and measures to ensure that the benefits of government reforms reach ordinary citizens.
The governors also reviewed the impact of ongoing reforms and considered areas where improvements were needed to make the policies more effective.

Sule, meanwhile, spoke about the President’s plans for greater use of Nigeria’s gas resources, particularly through compressed natural gas. He said the discussion included the investment required to expand gas utilisation and support the country’s energy needs.

According to him, Tinubu also called for greater unity within the APC and across the country, while urging governors to work towards reducing poverty and ensuring that more Nigerians benefit from government programmes.

The meeting came shortly after the APC released its Presidential Campaign Council structure on August 22. Tinubu was listed as chairman of the council, while Vice President Kashim Shettima was named vice chairman.

Former Zamfara State Governor, Abdulaziz Yari, was appointed Director-General, while Uzodinma was named secretary. The council also includes officials responsible for administration, mobilisation, media, election planning and coordination across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

The development comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the Independent National Electoral Commission having already announced the commencement of campaigns.

With APC governors now taking responsibility for mobilisation in their states, the party is expected to increase its grassroots activities as it prepares to defend Tinubu’s presidency at the polls.
