The document was made public on Wednesday by the Interim National Coordinator of the Obedient Movement, Dr Yinusa Tanko, as the dispute over the financial record of Obi’s administration continues.

According to the document dated March 17, 2024, Anambra State had a net positive balance of more than N86 billion at the time of the handover.

The release followed recent statements from officials of the Anambra State Government alleging that the state was still dealing with loans and other financial obligations inherited from previous administrations, including the government led by Obi.

The state government had claimed that some of the outstanding obligations included external loans, unpaid gratuities, pensions and other liabilities.

The document released by Obi’s camp, however, presented a different account of the state’s finances. It contained details of the financial position of Anambra State as of the close of business on March 17, 2024, and showed a positive balance exceeding N86 billion.

The controversy has continued to attract attention following claims that Anambra still has outstanding financial commitments from previous administrations.

The document also listed eight external loans with a combined outstanding balance of about $92.35 million. Based on the exchange rate as of June 30, 2026, the amount was put at approximately N127.37 billion.

The release of the handover document is part of Obi’s response to allegations that his administration left behind unpaid financial obligations for subsequent governments to manage.

The former governor has repeatedly disputed claims that his administration left the state with unpaid liabilities and has maintained that his financial record as governor can be examined.

The issue also attracted a response from the Presidency after Obi reportedly challenged anyone with evidence of financial wrongdoing or unpaid obligations from his tenure to come forward.

The Presidency subsequently challenged him to fulfil his pledge to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race if it could be established that his administration left behind the alleged debts and liabilities.

The latest document from Obi’s camp is therefore expected to form part of the ongoing debate over the financial records of Anambra State under his administration and the obligations inherited by subsequent governments.

The dispute comes as Obi prepares for the 2027 presidential election under the NDC, with his political opponents increasingly scrutinising his record as governor of Anambra State.

The competing claims over the state’s finances have yet to be settled, with Obi’s camp relying on the newly released handover document while state officials continue to maintain that some inherited obligations remain outstanding.
