2027: Wike Vows to Resign If Tinubu Loses FCT, Rivers

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has said he will resign from office if President Bola Tinubu loses the 2027 presidential election in the FCT and Rivers State.

Wike made the declaration on Wednesday during an engagement with leaders and members of the Apo Mechanics and Traders Association in Abuja, as political activities ahead of the January 16, 2027 presidential election continue.

The minister’s position was disclosed in a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication and Social Media, Lere Olayinka.

Wike said his continued stay in the Federal Executive Council would depend on his ability to secure the political support needed for Tinubu in the FCT and Rivers, which he considers his major areas of influence.

He stated that if the President fails to win both areas, he would submit his resignation the following day.

According to Wike, losing the FCT would mean he had failed to meet the political responsibility attached to his position as FCT Minister. He therefore set January 17, 2027, as the date he would announce his resignation if Tinubu does not win the FCT and Rivers State.

Speaking on his political plans for the FCT, Wike said the administration was working with politicians from different parties in an effort to secure victory for Tinubu and other candidates supported by the coalition.

He expressed support for Tinubu’s re-election bid and also backed Philip Aduda for the Senate, alongside two House of Representatives candidates who are former Area Council chairmen.

The minister said the coalition had agreed on a common political direction across the FCT and would work together to deliver the candidates it supports in the 2027 elections.

Wike added that his commitment to the electoral campaign was tied to his responsibility as FCT Minister and that he would accept the outcome of the election based on whether the political structure under his watch delivers the expected result.
