The Federal Government has approved an increase in the allocation for feeding members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) during their orientation course, with implementation expected to begin next year.
The NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, disclosed this while addressing members of the 2026 Batch C Stream One at the Cross River State Orientation Camp in Obubra.
Nafiu said the Budget Office had been notified of the upward review, adding that the new allocation was expected to take effect in 2027.
He urged corps members to manage their finances responsibly, avoid unnecessary spending and develop disciplined saving habits.
The NYSC chief also commended Nigerian youths for their resilience and commitment to national service. He advised them to prioritise their safety when travelling, urging them to avoid journeys after 6 p.m. and continue the following day where necessary.
He cautioned corps members against resting in public places or sleeping in groups at filling stations, warning that such practices could make them easy targets. Instead, he advised those facing safety concerns to seek assistance at military installations, police stations or Department of State Services offices and contact the NYSC hotline.
Nafiu also promised increased engagement with relevant stakeholders to improve infrastructure at the Obubra Orientation Camp, including efforts to establish and rehabilitate essential facilities.
He encouraged corps members to acquire practical skills that could improve their employment prospects and provide additional sources of income after their service year. He cited cosmetology, traditional hairstyling and other vocational disciplines as examples of areas they could explore.
Earlier, the NYSC Cross River State Coordinator, Mrs Adejoke Oyenuga, described the Director-General’s visit as evidence of his commitment to the welfare of corps members.
Oyenuga disclosed that 1,064 corps members had registered at the camp and reported that they had successfully adjusted to the structured orientation environment.
