The Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, has called on the Nigerian government to take firm action against those responsible for violent attacks on Christians in the country. She asked the authorities to bring the attackers to justice and improve security in communities that have been targeted.
She condemned the repeated attacks and stated that everyone has a right to practice their religion without fear. She also called for stronger protection for both Christian and other religious groups living in Nigeria, saying that communities should not have to live in danger because of their beliefs.
Her call came after fresh attacks in different parts of Nigeria. In Kwara State, gunmen attacked a church in the Eruku area on Tuesday evening. During the attack, two people were killed, while the church pastor and several worshippers were kidnapped.
The situation was further worsened by another recent incident in Kebbi State, where 25 schoolgirls were taken from a boarding school a few days earlier. These incidents have raised more concerns about the safety of religious and vulnerable communities across the country.
The growing wave of violence has placed more pressure on the Nigerian government, which is also facing international attention over the situation. United States President Donald Trump has publicly expressed concern and warned that strong actions could be taken over the alleged persecution of Christians in Nigeria.
Meloni also expressed support for the victims and communities affected by the attacks, stating that Italy stands with those who feel unsafe because of their faith, as calls for better protection and justice continue.
