President Bola Tinubu on Sunday met with leaders of West African countries in Abuja as part of the 68th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government. The meeting is being held at the State House Conference Centre.
Several heads of state are attending the session, including President Julius Bio of Sierra Leone, who currently chairs ECOWAS, President Patrice Talon of Benin, President José Maria Neves of Cabo Verde, and President Alassane Ouattara of Côte d’Ivoire. Other leaders present are from The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Senegal, and Togo.
The meeting comes at a time when the region has faced repeated political instability over the past five years. West Africa has witnessed military takeovers in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, creating concerns about democratic governance and regional security.
Recent events have added to these concerns, including an attempted coup in Benin on December 7, 2025, as well as renewed political tension in Guinea-Bissau. These developments have raised fresh worries about stability within the sub-region.
