NANS Threatens Nationwide Protest Over Threats to Private Refineries

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has warned against any action or policy that could weaken Nigeria’s private refinery sector, saying such moves could trigger a massive nationwide protest.

The warning came on Wednesday during a mass rally held at different locations across Abuja, Asaba, and Lagos, where student leaders called on the government to focus more on reviving and protecting local refineries instead of depending heavily on fuel importation.

According to NANS, Nigeria’s continuous importation of refined petroleum products despite being an oil-rich nation is deeply concerning. The group expressed disappointment over the prolonged neglect and mismanagement of local refineries, which has led to increased fuel prices, loss of jobs, and instability in the energy sector.

The student body stressed that revitalising refineries had become a crucial step toward strengthening the economy and reducing import dependence. It warned that any further delay or obstruction in refinery development could push students across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to occupy major highways in protest.

NANS further urged the Federal Government to create fair and transparent policies that will allow both public and private refineries to access crude oil easily and operate without disruption. It also called for the protection of investors and industrial harmony between workers and employers to encourage sustainable growth.

The student association also compared the decline of the petroleum industry to that of the once-thriving textile sector, warning that the same fate could befall the refining industry if local businesses continue to suffer from poor policy support.

NANS said it would continue to support policies that promote employment, economic growth, and industrial recovery while urging Nigerians not to ignore issues that affect national progress.

The association reaffirmed its commitment to lawful engagement in ensuring that the government remains accountable in revitalising the energy and industrial sectors.
