A member of the House of Representatives, Obi Aguocha, has questioned why the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, is still being detained while President Bola Tinubu has granted clemency to individuals convicted of serious crimes, including drug offences and murder.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television on Sunday, Aguocha, who represents Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency of Abia State, said the decision reflects unfair treatment towards the Igbo people.

He argued that the continued detention of Kanu, despite repeated appeals for his release, shows that Igbos are subjected to stricter justice compared to others in the country.

Aguocha added that while some offenders have been pardoned and allowed to return home, Kanu has remained in detention for nearly a decade without freedom.
The lawmaker called on Igbos to peacefully demand equal justice and fair treatment, noting that the contrast between Kanu’s prolonged detention and the recent clemency granted to convicted offenders exposes deep inequality in Nigeria’s justice system.
