IPOB Appeals to U.S. for Independent Investigation Into Southeast Crisis

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has called on the United States government to send a neutral team of investigators to Nigeria’s Southeast region to examine the root causes of insecurity and determine those responsible for the violence affecting the area.

The appeal was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, by IPOB’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful.The group said the request became necessary following what it described as ongoing misinformation linking IPOB to violent attacks and unrest in the Southeast.

According to the group, an international investigation would help reveal the true situation in the region and identify those fueling the crisis.IPOB restated that it remains a peaceful organization working toward self-determination and said it is ready to cooperate fully with any independent fact-finding team.

The Southeast has continued to experience repeated cases of violence, including attacks on security personnel, government facilities, and traditional rulers.

Security agencies have often accused IPOB and its affiliate group, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), of being responsible for such incidents. However, IPOB has repeatedly denied these claims, insisting that criminal groups and political interests are behind the unrest.

The group also renewed its demand for the release of its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu, whose continued detention, despite court rulings ordering his freedom, has remained a major issue between IPOB and the federal government.

IPOB stated that a transparent international investigation would promote truth, accountability, and fairness, adding that the findings would help determine whether the group has been wrongly accused or not.

Human rights organizations have in recent years voiced concern over the deteriorating security situation in the Southeast and urged all parties to respect human rights and the rule of law.The Nigerian government has yet to respond to IPOB’s latest call.

Analysts believe that if the U.S. government agrees to the group’s request, such an investigation could provide clarity, reduce tensions, and contribute to peace efforts in the region.
