Human rights activist and Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, has said he will challenge the court order stopping the planned #FreeNnamdiKanu protest in Abuja.

The protest, which is scheduled to hold on October 20, was restricted by a Federal High Court in Abuja following a suit filed by the Federal Republic of Nigeria against Sowore and four others.

The order, issued on October 17, 2025, by Justice M.G. Umar, prohibits demonstrations around key government areas, including Aso Rock Villa, the National Assembly Complex, Force Headquarters, the Court of Appeal, Eagle Square, and Shehu Shagari Way.

The Nigeria Police had earlier warned against holding any protest near the Presidential Villa or other restricted locations.Reacting to the court ruling through a statement on his verified X handle, Sowore said he and his legal team of 115 lawyers would challenge the order once they officially receive it.
He also questioned why the police had not obtained a similar order against groups who had been protesting for days against the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.
According to him, the ban on the protest reflects double standards and an attempt to suppress lawful expression. Sowore insisted that despite the restriction, the October 20 demonstration would go on as a peaceful and lawful protest demanding Kanu’s freedom.
