Police Refute Claims of Shooting at #FreeNnamdiKanu Protesters in Abuja

The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed reports that its officers fired live bullets at demonstrators during the #FreeNnamdiKanu protest held in Abuja on Monday.

The clarification came from the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, during a television interview on Monday night.

His statement followed viral videos showing protesters running in panic as gunfire-like sounds were heard. Among those reportedly present at the protest was activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore.

Hundeyin explained that police officers only used teargas to disperse the crowd after they attempted to enter restricted parts of the city. He said the sound from the teargas devices might have been mistaken for gunfire, especially by those unfamiliar with such equipment.

According to the police spokesperson, security operatives had repeatedly warned the protesters before taking any action. He stated that the officers operated strictly under standard rules, applying minimal force when the demonstrators refused to remain within designated areas.

The protest, which was organized to demand the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, attracted a large turnout before it was eventually dispersed by security personnel.By Monday night, there were no confirmed cases of deaths or serious injuries.

The police maintained that their operation aimed to prevent disorder and ensure compliance with court restrictions on protests in some parts of the Federal Capital Territory.
