Ogun Councillors Suspend LG Chairman Over Misconduct Allegations

Members of the Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Legislative Council in Ogun State have suspended the council chairman, Wasiu Lawal, over allegations of financial and administrative misconduct. The decision was taken on Thursday, October 30, 2025, after a motion was raised during a council meeting held at the local government secretariat.

The motion, filed by the councillor representing Ota Ward 2, Musediq Asalu, accused the chairman of negligence, insubordination, and failure to provide the council with the local government’s income and expenditure records despite several formal requests. The councillor explained that the chairman’s refusal to submit the documents violated provisions of the Ogun State Local Government Law 2000 (as amended) and raised concerns about possible financial irregularities.

Following the presentation of the motion, it was supported by the councillor from Agbara Ward and approved by the legislative council after no member backed a counter-motion. The lawmakers resolved that the chairman should be suspended for three months while an investigation into the financial and administrative management of the local government is carried out.

During the suspension period, the councillors directed Lawal to hand over all official items in his possession, including vehicles, documents, and communication devices, to the Head of Local Government Administration. They also instructed the Vice Chairman, Abosede Balogun, to take over as acting chairman and perform all official duties as required by law.

The leader of the council, Mutairu Gbadamosi, appealed to Governor Dapo Abiodun and other state authorities to ensure the safety of the councillors after reports that some suspected loyalists of the suspended chairman attempted to disrupt the meeting at the secretariat.

When contacted by reporters, Wasiu Lawal denied the allegations and described his suspension as false. He insisted that the reports circulating about his removal were untrue.

The development has drawn attention across the state, with residents awaiting further updates from the investigation into the alleged misconduct within the Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government.
