Former President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Ayo Salami, has explained that former President Goodluck Jonathan is not eligible to run for the 2027 presidential election based on the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution.

Justice Salami stated that the Constitution allows any individual to serve only a maximum of eight years as president, a condition Jonathan has already fulfilled. He pointed out that Jonathan first completed the tenure of late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua before winning and serving his own four-year term from 2011 to 2015.

According to him, Jonathan’s service period already totals more than what the Constitution permits, making him legally disqualified from seeking another term in office.

In his written opinion, Justice Salami warned that any attempt by Jonathan to contest or win another presidential election would go against constitutional provisions and could be nullified by the courts. He explained that the matter is not political but purely legal, as the Constitution was designed to prevent any president from exceeding two terms, regardless of how the person first assumed office.
Jonathan, who lost his reelection bid in 2015, has recently been linked to reports suggesting a possible comeback in 2027. However, legal authorities, including Justice Salami, maintain that the term limit rule clearly prevents him from returning to power under the current Constitution.
