The Nigerian Army has dismissed claims circulating on social media that its personnel were involved in electoral malpractice during the Anambra governorship election, stating that soldiers were only deployed to rescue National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials who were held hostage by suspected political thugs in Awka.

According to a statement issued by the 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, the incident took place on November 8, 2025, at Ukwu Oji Umuebele, Awka Ward 5, in Awka South Local Government Area. The Army explained that troops were sent to the area following a distress call reporting that corps members and INEC staff had been trapped after the sudden disappearance of the polling unit’s Collation Officer.

A rapid response team comprising two officers and twelve soldiers from the 302 Artillery Regiment was immediately dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, the soldiers met a tense situation involving political stakeholders, including the Deputy Governor of the state, who questioned the military’s presence. Despite the heated atmosphere, the troops were said to have acted with restraint and professionalism.

The Army confirmed that its personnel successfully rescued the stranded NYSC members and INEC staff and safely escorted them to the commission’s office, allowing the collation process to resume without further disruption.
It described the viral video circulating online as misleading, stressing that its intervention was purely humanitarian and aimed at protecting lives and safeguarding the electoral process. The Army said it would continue to work closely with the Anambra State Government to ensure improved coordination during future operations.
Reaffirming its commitment to neutrality and professionalism, the 82 Division urged Nigerians to disregard false reports and continue supporting security agencies in maintaining peace, safety, and order during elections across the country.
