A former Governor of Kaduna State, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, has stepped down from his role as Secretary of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party. He left the position on Monday, November 17, 2025, after stating that the choice of a new National Chairman from his geopolitical zone made it proper for him to leave.

The development came two days after the PDP concluded its national convention in Ibadan, where a former Minister of Special Duties, Kabiru Turaki, was chosen as the new National Chairman. Turaki is from the North-West, the same zone Makarfi comes from, and this led Makarfi to send his resignation letter from his home in Kaduna to the BoT Chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara.

Makarfi explained that he had already tried to leave the position about two months earlier through the BoT WhatsApp channel, but the leadership of the Board asked him to remain until the convention was completed. He stayed on until the party produced a new chairman and said he believed it was proper for the two top roles not to come from the same zone.

He said this latest decision was taken to avoid any form of imbalance within the party’s leadership and to allow the newly chosen chairman to operate without interference. He formally confirmed that he was leaving the office with immediate effect.
Makarfi, who governed Kaduna State from 1999 to 2007 and took on different roles in the PDP afterward, thanked the BoT Chairman and other members for the cooperation he received while serving. He noted that he enjoyed a smooth working relationship with the Board during his time as secretary and expressed gratitude for their support throughout his tenure.
