The United States Defence Secretary, Pete Hegseth, has urged the Nigerian government to take firm and quick action to stop violent attacks, especially those affecting Christian communities. He made this call during a high-level meeting with Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and his team in Washington.

The US Department of Defense said the meeting focused on worsening security conditions in Nigeria and the need for long-term and urgent steps to end killings and attacks linked to terrorist groups. The United States signaled its readiness to work more closely with Nigeria to weaken terrorist networks and improve regional security.

This development followed recent comments by US President Donald Trump, who warned that Christianity was under serious threat in Nigeria and suggested that military intervention could be considered if the Nigerian government failed to stop the violence.

In a related move, US Congressman Riley Moore also met with the Nigerian delegation in Washington, describing the talks as honest and productive. The discussions centred on counterterrorism cooperation, protection of vulnerable communities, and security assistance.
The Nigerian delegation included top government and security officials such as the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Bianca Ojukwu, the Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, the Attorney General of the Federation Lateef Fagbemi, the Chief of Defence Staff, and senior intelligence officers.
The United States continues to press for stronger action from Nigeria while offering closer security cooperation to address the ongoing insecurity and terrorist threats affecting communities across the country.
