Edo PDP Dismisses Claims of Convention and Expulsions

The Peoples Democratic Party in Edo State on Wednesday moved to clear the air after a message began to circulate online claiming that the party held a national convention in Ibadan on November 16, 2025. The message also claimed that a new national chairman had been chosen and that some members, including the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, had been expelled.

The Edo PDP said the report was false and explained that no national convention was held anywhere in the country. According to the party, the PDP Constitution of 2017 sets out the procedure for such an event, and the party has not carried out any of those steps. Because of this, the group said no one could claim to hold any national office through a convention that never happened.

The party said the event described by those spreading the message did not take place and had no link to its official structures. PDP officials noted that two High Court judgments are still active, both dealing with issues around party leadership and also putting a stop to any convention until pending matters are settled. These rulings, the party stated, remain valid since no higher court has overturned them.

In its statement, the Edo PDP said any action taken in disregard of these court orders, including the claim that a handover took place or that a new leader emerged, has no weight in law. The party added that the documents shared online as expulsion certificates for Wike and others were not real. It described the action as an attempt to imitate party processes without any legal backing. The group noted that no member can be removed through a process that ignores both the party constitution and existing court rulings.

The party said the situation goes against the values with which the PDP was formed. It explained that the party can only be strengthened when proper procedures are followed, genuine unity efforts are made, and respect for the rule of law is upheld. According to the Edo PDP, rebuilding the party cannot be done through false claims or unlawful steps.

Edo PDP members said that while the party remains strong, it must be protected from people trying to impose structures that do not come from its recognised organs. They said it was wrong for anyone to push actions that go outside the law while claiming to defend the party.

The Edo PDP insisted that there was no national convention, that Kabiru Tanimu Turaki is not the national chairman, and that the expulsion claims hold no force. It urged party members in the state, across the country, and in the diaspora to ignore the circulating report and remain loyal to the constitution of the party.
